How to choose between refined and unrefined coconut oil?
Skincare
As a beauty product, unrefined coconut oil is the preferred type to use. The lack of processing means the oil retains all of what nature intended, but both refined and unrefined oils have the same moisturizing power so, if you don’t like the smell of unrefined coconut oil, it’s perfectly fine to opt for the refined one.
Cooking & Baking
Both oils are excellent for cooking & baking, so which one you choose really depends on what type of dish you’re doing. A subtle coconut taste can either complement or clash with the other flavors in a dish—something to keep in mind since unrefined coconut oil will impart some of its flavors to your meal. If you’re looking for neutral cooking oil, refined coconut oil is your best bet. It’s also a better choice for high heat cooking, due to its higher smoke point.
Cold Pressing
It is a chemical-free process that involves placing the nuts or seeds in a horizontal press that has an ‘expeller,’ which is a rotating screw. The screw drives the nuts and seeds through a barrel-shaped hollow and compresses them until the high pressure squeezes out the oil, which seeps out through the opening, while the ‘meal,’ or the debris, remains inside the barrel. The oil is then filtered, resulting in the finished product. Due to the absence of solvent residues in Cold Pressing, the outcome is cleaner, purer oils that are higher in natural colors and scents.
